Description

It is one thing to decide to respect the body you have (instead of the body you wish you had); it is another thing to know how to create clothes that actually fit it. Part math, part self-love journey, this body-affirming class will teach you the skills to approach knitting as a practice of acknowledging, honoring, and clothing your unique body.

NOTE: This is a live online class hosted on Zoom. You will receive an email with a Zoom link before the start of class.

Required skills:

  • Knit, purl, increase/decrease using k2tog and ssk
  • Recommended but not required: experience knitting at least one sweater from a pattern from start to finish

What you'll learn:

  • How to recognize underlying fit issues that make you feel un/comfortable in clothes and find solutions
  • How to apply a body positive perspective to questions of “comfort”
  • How to read a gauge swatch and understand what those numbers actually mean for sizing/fit
  • How to identify the most common types of sweater construction and the unique fit issues for each type
  • How to select the best size for your body/comfort in a knitting pattern
  • When and how to use some of the most common adjustments in knitting, such as different kinds of bust darts, waist/belly shaping, and shoulder/bicep adjustments

Homework & preparation

Upon registration, you will receive an email with a materials list and homework to be completed prior to class. Please budget at least 2 hours to complete the homework and prepare for class before class begins. Understandably, students who show up fully prepared will get the most out of the class.

Scholarship spots

There are two scholarship spots available for students in each class at 50% off. These spots are offered on a first-come basis with suggested priority to QTBIPOC (queer, trans, Black, indigenous, people of color). To claim a scholarship spot, enter discount code KnitToFit50 at checkout and 50% will be deducted from your class registration fee. Scholarships are provided on the honor system, with no proof or explanation required. Once registered, scholarship students will be treated just like all other students in the class, and all students are requested to keep the manner of their enrollment (scholarship or not) private during class.
